Eat & Drink

One kitchen, two rooms, and a counter that opens first

The coffee house is on the quay and open to anyone walking past. The restaurant is the floor above it, and takes bookings.

The counter opens at seven, which is when the market traders want it rather than when visitors do. It stays open until the last of them have packed up, and one cup buys the chair for as long as you want it.

Upstairs is one sitting an evening, Wednesday to Saturday. The menu is short because the kitchen is small and everything on it has to be right at nine as well as at seven. It changes when the market changes, which in practice means every few weeks.

Both rooms are fed from the same kitchen, and most of what reaches them was carried up from under the canopy that morning.

Menu

What is on, and what it costs

The same price sitting in and taking away. The kitchen will change a dish where it honestly can — say so when you order rather than after.

  • Flat white

    £3.40

Two shots, pulled to order, and the milk is not hurried to keep a queue moving.

    • Oat or soya
  • Filter, by the cup

    £2.90

Brewed one at a time. Ask what is in the grinder today and you get a name, not a region.

  • Morning bun

    £3.20

Baked at the far end of the canopy and carried up the back stairs before half past six.

    • Vegetarian
  • Soup and bread

    £7.50

Whatever the traders had too much of on Tuesday. It changes every week and it is written on the board rather than printed here.

    • Vegan
  • Market plate

    £14.00

Cheese, cured meat, pickles and bread, all of it bought downstairs the same morning.

    • Gluten-free bread
  • Dinner, three courses

    £38.00

Upstairs, one sitting, Wednesday to Saturday. The card is written the same afternoon it is served.

  • Sunday lunch

    £24.00

One long table on the quay side, served at one o'clock, until the market shuts for the winter.

    • Booking only

The rooms

The counter, the canopy and the room upstairs

Both rooms and the kitchen between them, photographed on ordinary days rather than dressed for it.

  • The coffee counter at seven, before the canopy opens
  • Saturday under the canopy, stalls laid out below the roof lights
  • The pass in the upstairs kitchen, mid-service
  • The long table on the quay side, laid for Sunday lunch
  • Bread coming up the back stairs from the bakery stall
  • The restaurant at the end of service, windows onto the water

When each room is open

The counter follows the market, so it opens earlier than anything else on the wharf and shuts when the canopy does. The restaurant serves one sitting, Wednesday to Saturday.

Ask for a table upstairs

This is a request rather than a confirmation. We read it against the book and come back the same day with a yes or the nearest evening we have got. Put allergies in the last box — they are far easier to plan around now than in the middle of service.

Eating that is not only dinner

Suppers, tastings and the market kitchen, all of them in one of the two rooms. Numbers are small, so these go early.

  • Last Thursday of the month, 7pm

    Traders' supper

    The upstairs room

One long table, one menu, cooked from whatever four traders carried up that afternoon. You sit beside whoever booked after you.

  • Every other Saturday, 9am

    Cupping at the counter

    The coffee house

Six cups side by side and an honest conversation about which of them you would actually buy. No charge, but the counter needs to know you are coming.

  • First Sunday of the month, 11am

    Bread and cheese, market kitchen

    Under the canopy

Two traders, one bench, and a morning on the two things that go together best. You take home what you make.

  • Fridays through December, until 9pm

    Winter market late opening

    The grain store

The kitchen moves downstairs for the evening and cooks one thing well. The restaurant stays shut upstairs on those nights.

Allergens, and what we can actually change

Tell us when you book and tell whoever takes the order. What you say at the door goes onto the ticket and is read back before the plate leaves the pass.

The kitchen is one room and the bakery bench is fifty feet away under the canopy, so we will not tell you a dish is free of something when we cannot stand behind it. Where we can cook around it we say so. Where we cannot, you hear that at the table rather than afterwards.

Before you come

Getting in

The quay is level from the north gate. The upstairs room is reached by the lift in the coffee house, and somebody will meet you at it if you say so when you book.

Children and dogs

Both rooms, both welcome. There are high chairs at the counter and water by the door; upstairs asks only that dogs stay under the table during service.

Bigger groups

Eight and over goes on the long table rather than two tables pushed together. Ring rather than use the form — it is quicker for both of us.
