Three that started here

Each of these took a room in the quarter before they had very much to put in it. None of them is still in the room they started in.

Marrow & Vine

Two market days a month, and a van they were half living out of between them.

  • Took a half-stall in the covered market

  • Moved to a full stall the following season

  • Now cooks out of the shared kitchen on the north range

Trades six dayswhere it was two

Coldstream Press

A letterpress that needed a floor strong enough to hold it and a landlord who understood why.

  • Second floor of the grain store, taken for the beams

  • Goods lift opening widened to get the platen in

  • Runs two classes a month out of the same room

Two presseswhere there was one

Halyard Ceramics

Three makers sharing one kiln and disagreeing about firing times.

  • Started on a shared bench in the print studio

  • Took a studio of their own for the three-phase power

  • Fires work for four other makers in the quarter

Where the quarter has been written about

Every one of these goes to the piece itself rather than to us summarising it. We have kept the ones that got it wrong as well.

From the quarter's own feed

A few of the posts worth keeping. Tap one to see it where it was posted.

What the archive holds

The quarter keeps its own record, largely because nobody else was going to. Every tenancy, every change of use and every roof that came off is written down in the office above the market, along with a good deal that is only interesting to us.

What is worth reading has been put on the blog. What is not has been left where it is, and you are welcome to come and look at it.

Photographs

Of the buildings, and of people only where the people have said yes.

Somebody to walk you round

An hour, most mornings, and better than any of the photographs.

The plain facts

What is here, who runs it, and what the building was before. No figures we cannot stand up.
